@norm@nullenvk like, if a CS2 update comes out that has new code that does not make sense in CS2, but would make sense in another game, one can suspect that Valve is working on another game
@wolf480pl@nullenvk honestly given how long people have waited for hl3 and how at one point it seemed like valve canned the whole thing in favour of HL:Alyx, I don't really get why people were still so hyped about it instead of having tempered expectations
@norm@wolf480pl Every single source was claiming that Valve definitely won't announce anything at TGA. However, today was the very last day when Valve could announce something in 2025 (since the company's going on winter break very soon). So... People got hyped regardless. That's it. That's the whole reason.
@wolf480pl@norm Pretty much this. Valve's games are developed alongside their in-house engine - Source 2. I don't think I have to explain how rare of a situation that is (especially in the age when 99% of larger studios just use Unity or UE5), and how that leads to some interesting implications.
Most games get developed on their separate branches of S2 (or at least I hope they are), but engine-level features often get backported to already released titles like CS2, Dota 2 or Deadlock. Datamining Dota 2 pretty much let us figure out all gameplay elements of Half-Life Alyx even before the game got released. And for the past few years, that's what the community's been doing with Deadlock and CS2 (i'm not sure whether we still get any significant info from Dota 2 anymore) - datamining all leaked references to HLX and engine features that don't fit into existing games.
@wolf480pl@norm Here's a fun fact: most of the time, they still manage to keep game-level code separated from one another. However, back in 2015, they have actually fucked up once and compiled in... checks notes the entirety of the 2013 build of HL3 right into SteamVR Performance Test. That's how we've learned nearly everything about the tech of that iteration of the game.
that makes me wonder though - how the hell haven't they learned from their mistakes? unless this is somehow intentional, that is
@nullenvk@wolf480pl I mean this isn't the first time I've heard of leaks from datamining Source 2 games, and I guess it's likely HL3 is coming sooner than later, but it definitely wasn't going to be this early
@norm@wolf480pl wdym "this early"? the game's been in development for nearly 5 years. I'm not stupid enough to claim that they're going to release it on some magically chosen date in near future, but it's pretty clear that it's coming soon.
