sigh.

stop telling people to use browser forks.
they are light reskins with no meaningful changes and still depend entirely on their upstreams for engine development and maintenance. they do harmful things without understanding the consequences.

most of the features advertised on waterfox's home page are available in vanilla firefox. they don't disclose anywhere that they're a fork and take all the credit for things they didn't make.
librewolf enables fingerprinting hardening by default which breaks tons of websites and actually makes you stand out
more.
all of those are just firefox with extra steps. you're not actually emancipating yourself from mozilla. no one has the resources the develop a browser independently.

stop recommending browser forks.

@novenary I can see some value in some if they provide a more private configuration out of the box, but yeah I generally like sticking to the upstream browser just cause I don't have to worry about breakage or some random config turned on that I need to fight with.

@norm i don't really believe in those things tbh, stock firefox with ublock origin and a couple tweaks to enhanced tracking protection is all you can realistically do to combat tracking. like I said, anything else just makes things worse because you deviate from the defaults which makes you more fingerprintable, not less.
the fingerprinting resistance thing is used by the tor browser, but in such a way that makes tor users indistinguishable from each other. it's still pretty obvious that you're using tor, but that's part of the threat model tor is built upon. turning this on for clearnet makes no sense.

@novenary yeah i agree, its kinda best to just blend in with everyone else and not stand out

Really the way to get rid of tracking is removing incentives for those in the first place but that is definitely a lot more effort and requires more structural change

@norm yeah as much as I hate the thing that chrome did where it creates advertising profiles locally, to some extent it does dilute the incentive to track people

at the same time, mainstream browsers are also constantly refining their own anti-fingerprinting measures and when they're shipped by default, they benefit everyone
