@laru huh...

well it's a wine prefix manager with installer scripts that is supposed to make it easier to install certain windows applications

@norm oh i always did that manually, just spun up a new .wine for every application and experimented with winetricks till it worked

@laru I used to do that but honestly I just use steam and protontricks, though given that most Windows apps I run are games it might not be for everyone

@norm i havent used steam in like forever, and considering theyre now going anti ownership too i dont think id want to rely on them (not directly a problem with proton but if wine works fine for the rare occasions when i need it why would i want to use some potentially abusive corporations fork)

@norm @laru yeah I don't really see what this changes lol
I don't think valve has ever taken games away? afaik games have only been delisted/removed from sale but you can still play them if you'd bought them prior
unless of course the game relies on online services that have shut down but there's nothing valve can do about that

@novenary @norm well maybe they wont take stuff away but im not really a fan of the whole thing of not being able to just store your games in an arbitrary location on your disk and running them standalone

you cant just copy a game from your steamapps folder, uninstall steam and then run it

its basically drm

@laru @novenary I mean worst case there's a way to emulate the steamworks stuff iirc

@norm @novenary surely theres a way to circumvent it yeah, but i dont want that to be the standard way to play games for people who dont wanna be cucked by valve

@norm @novenary most games i play are actually gba/nds roms, not necessarily because they provide maximum freedoms but you happen to get that as a bonus

@laru @norm this is also not really valve's fault, their own games are effectively drm-free, but most others do have actual DRM yes
