honestly surprised there isn't a mostly one-way federation mode to deal with instances that aren't awful but you'd rather limit your interactions with (like the large instances that are mostly unblockable)

like, it wouldn't be hard would it
receive their posts, maybe follow their users
but don't send them yours unless you directly mention one of them, or whatever
possibly handle the case where you would accept follow requests from there by capping to followers-only

@novenary I know mastodon has the "limited" federation option where instances under that list don't show up for users on your instance unless they specifically follow them and also all accounts on your instance are treated as being locked for those on the other instance
